The Sound of Your Heart: Reboot Netflix - Review

The Sound of Your Heart: Reboot won a new season where the producers chose to start again instead of using the same cast that participated in the first attempt to take it to the public (watch here). One of the main reasons for this is that most of the previous actors suffered from a lack of charisma as well as lack of chemistry between them.

That way, it was easier to start from scratch. And it was a wise decision. The cast in The Sound of Your Heart: Reboot is much better, generating more empathy with the public.

Add this to a funny and friendly story and you’ll have one of the best Doramas available in the Netflix catalog so far. Fans of the previous version will not be disappointed: the cast may have changed, but the essence remains the same.

A dysfunctional person

Because it is a relatively short comedy, one can not expect a deepening in the characters of The Sound of Your Heart: Reboot. But what we know of them is enough to get attached to: the aspiring cartoonist Cho Seok lives surrounded with the problems of his family.

Beyond the tight spots he gets into, he’s able to stand out in the very competitive market of webtoons (cartoons made for the internet). Being a dysfunctional guy, Seok goes through bad situations with his relatives and destiny itself, that always puts something in his way.

His adventures to try to reach a position of success, despite the problems, are the main theme of the 30-minute episodes of this super fun dorama, which combines an innocent humor - despite being very nonsense - with a story of overcoming. The Seok family is a whole other case.

Each of them has a distinct personality and serve as inspiration for the cartoonist’s drawings. The controlling mother, the attention seeker father, the troublesome sibling, and the patient girlfriend are everything a guy like Seok doesn’t need, but it’s what he has, so he must with it.

The scenes of interaction between them are the best of the whole series. As each one has a different personality, they end up conflicting.

A real story

For those who do not know, Cho Seok really exists and he uses his family as raw material for his work. The most known is “Maeumui Sori”, in which this dorama is based to build its plot.

As the first adaptation was very successful with the Netflix audience, there was the concern that with the new cast, the mood would be lost. These fears dissipate as early as the first episodes.

The new actors are sharper than the previous ones, lavishing charisma and talent. And let’s agree that, to interpret such nonsense characters, you need to be quite competent not to fall into an overly ridiculous version.

One problem that viewers may face is the lack of chronological order in Seok’s stories toward success. The series shows the life of the cartoonist in a fragmented way, without following a correct order, this can cause some problem in the understanding of the narrative line.

But it is nothing that is impossible to follow with a little bit of attention. The Sound of Your Heart: Reboot, finally, is a good opportunity to watch an exaggerated and slightly caricature comedy drama, like all good eastern productions.

Knowing that this is a real story only gives a greater highlight to the production - and shows that, to gain fame, you have to travel a tortuous route that can be very funny if you have that presence of mind.
